There are assurances that immigration officers are well-equipped to handle their new powers. Immigration officers now have the power to arrest and detain over-stayers for deportation before handing them over to police. Immigration New Zealand general manager of intelligence, risk and integrity, Peter Elms, says immigration officers have undergone a rigorous process to reach this point.
He says they're not doing the job of police, and their powers are limited.
"They're only for the purposes of detaining people for deportation, and when we talk about detaining people we're saying detaining for up to a maximum period of four hours, which gives us sufficient time to take people into police custody."
Mr Elms says the training that's gone into upskilling the officers has been comprehensive and has involved a two week course held at the police college.
