Companies that break marine consent rules in the Exclusive Economic Zone will face fines of up to a whopping $10 million under proposed changes to a Government Bill. That's amongst amendments suggested by Environment Minister Amy Adams to the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf Bill. Ms Adams says lifting the maximum fine from $600,000 will send a strong message about the value of our oceans. Other changes include clarifying a transitional period for planned petroleum activities to cover the 2013/14 drilling season and amending the purpose of the Bill to include sustainable management of our oceans for economic growth.
