The Government has agreed to take a look at the East Coast of the North Island's transport network following a discussion with local leaders. Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee and Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce today met with mayors from Gisborne and Hawke's Bay to discuss BERL's independent report on the rail line. They've since announced they'll work together to deliver a broad study of the regionâ s economic potential over the next 30 years and transport infrastructure requirements. Mr Brownlee says the decision is about planning for decades ahead, rather than confronting issues on an ad hoc basis. Work will begin immediately to draw up terms of reference for the study.
