Road safety warning ahead of Scallop Festival

By: Natasha Burling | New Zealand News | Saturday September 15 2012 7:50

People heading to Whitianga for the Scallop Festival are being urged to be careful on the roads.

There was a head-on collision between two cars yesterday afternoon on State Highway 25, south of the town.

Three people were airlifted to Waikato Hospital and three were taken to Thames Hospital.

Senior Sergeant Graham Shields says Whitianga Police have done a lot of planning to prepare for a large influx of people this weekend.

However, he says an accident like this is an unpleasant reminder it's up to motorists to do the right thing.

Senior Sergeant Shields is urging people to slow down, wear their seatbelt, don't drink and drive and have a rest if they're tired.
