Firearms safety will be top of mind for duck shooters today, after two hunting deaths in a month. The duck season officially begins this morning. Fish and Game says last weekend's shooting of a deer hunter in Southland is a tragic reminder of the need to focus on safety first. CEO Bryce Johnson says with 40,000 hunters out for the opening day, honorary rangers will be enforcing the safety message. He says police won't tolerate unsafe handling of a firearm, and hunters should avoid alcohol and drugs when they're shooting. Photo: NZ Herald |
