Tourist injured in crash prepares to return home

| New Zealand News | Monday October 22 2012 12:00

The American tourist critically who was injured in a high speed crash near Waitomo Caves last month is preparing to return home.

Twenty-eight-year-old Kirsten Steinke was on her honeymoon, and her new husband Kallan Stithem was killed in the smash on September 20.

Jim Steinke says after spending 32 days in Waikato Hospital, his daughter is heading for a high quality rehab centre in the United States.

"She's recovering far quicker than anyone has predicted to date."

Jim Steinke says it's not clear if she realises her husband was killed.

"Short term memory's difficult, she's aware she's been in an accident, she's recovering."

The couple had been married for less than a week when the crash happened.
