Crane salvage halts oil response team

By: Natasha Burling | New Zealand News | Friday August 10 2012 15:10

An oil spill response team has been stood down until a crane is salvaged in Milford Sound.

The team was put in place when a crane on a barge toppled onto its side in Freshwater Basin two days ago.

There's still 1600 litres of hydraulic oil on the barge plus 200 litres of diesel and 24 litres of engine oil in the crane.

Environment Southland says oil spill equipment remains in place while plans are made to salvage the crane.

Oil spill response teams will return when the crane is salvaged, ready to respond to any oil spillage that may occur as the crane is righted.

The barge and crane have been stable since the accident and no oil is leaking.
