By: Newstalk ZB staff | New Zealand News | Monday May 7 2012 13:49

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed the death of a New Zealand citizen in Tahiti

The French Polynesia Boxing Federation has confirmed to AFP that Peruvian-born Willman Rodriguez Gomez died in a Papeete hospital, an hour after being admitted on Friday.

The 29-year-old lightweight was based in Auckland and had been listed to fight a rookie Tahitian.

A ministry spokeswoman says consular staff are providing assistance to the man's family.

She says Consulate General in New Caledonia is liaising with the Honorary Consul to assist the family.
