Karearea crowned bird of the year

By: Kaye Albyt | New Zealand News | Wednesday October 10 2012 18:39

The eagle has landed in the latest Bird of the Year contest.

The New Zealand falcon, or karearea, wins the crown, after clinching 1261 of the more than 10,000 votes cast.

Forest and Bird spokesman Kevin Hackwell says the karearea is a pretty impressive creature, which can reach speeds of 230 kilometres an hour and catch prey mid-flight.
