Concern TPP may risk access to affordable medicines

By: Laura Heathcote | New Zealand News | Monday December 3 2012 15:16

Doctors Without Borders fears if New Zealand signs up to the Trans Pacific Partnership, it will risk access to affordable medicines.

Five hundred international negotiators are in Auckland this week for the 15th round of talks.

Doctors Without Borders spokeswoman Kelly Nicholls says leaked drafts of the United States negotiating positions show it wants intellectual property provisions which enhance patent and data protections.

She says that will make it harder for countries to gain access to affordable generic drugs, which are vital to millions of people around the world.
