New Zealand's moving up in the innovation stakes. We've been ranked 13th in the 2012 Global Innovation Index, up two places from 2011. That puts us ahead of Australia, who are ranked 23rd, and also some of the world's biggest economies such as Korea, China, Japan and Germany. Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce says the index is one of the most widely used indicators of national competitiveness, and we've scored highly on the ease of starting a business, education, knowledge creation and the number of new businesses per capita.
