Nigerian man sentenced to home detention

By: Newstalk ZB staff | New Zealand News | Saturday April 28 2012 7:27

A Nigerian man has been sentenced to home detention after using fake birth certificates, in an effort to bring five children into the country.

Remi Eme Chukwu arrived in 2007 on a visitor's permit.

The New Zealand Herald reports he applied for permanent residency the following year, after marrying a New Zealand woman.

Seven children were named in the application but immigration officials found some of their birth certificates were made in the man's west Auckland home.

Chukwu pleaded guilty to 10 charges under the Immigration Act, and got 11 months' home detention.
