Scientists at Scott Base in Antarctica are preparing to mark the last sunset before the winter season arrives.
Today will see the final hour of daylight for the next four months.
Antarctic New Zealand field support Mike Rowe says the months of darkness are the coldest months as well
"We've certainly winterised the base, it just means not leaving anything outside really because you won't be able to find it again because it will be buried in snow."
Mike Rowe says most people are psychologically prepared for the darkness.
