Alliance Group moving Mataura sheepmeat processor

By: Kaye Albyt | New Zealand News | Friday September 28 2012 17:04

Jobs are on the line at one of Southland's largest employers, but exact numbers aren't yet known.

Alliance Group is moving its sheepmeat processing from Mataura to its Lorneville Plant near Invercargill.

Spokesman Grant Curr says it's due to a change in local farming.

"We've seen a 20 percent decline in sheep and lamb numbers over the last five years in the region. As a result we have too much processing capacity. With no improvement in forecast stock numbers, we're proposing to end the sheep and lamb processing at Mataura."

Around 260 processing staff at Mataura will be offered the chance to transfer to Lorneville.

The jobs of 65 management, supervisors, engineers and admin staff will also be affected.
