Concern over idea of user-pay libraries

By: Annabel Reid | New Zealand News | Wednesday September 5 2012 15:11

The idea of paying to use the library is being seen as a real threat.

A Local Government Act Bill is at select committee stage which could lead to a user-pays system for libraries.

Literacy Aotearoa CEO Bronwyn Yates says it's something they've had concerns about for a while.

"Earlier this year we sent a letter to all the MPs, in February actually, asking them to look at legislation that could enshrine protection of free use for libraries."

Bronwyn Yates says they didn't get very many responses, just a couple of thank yous.
