Six weeks training could be enough to teach

By: Anna Cross | Latest National News | Sunday January 22 2012 8:53

Teachers with as little as six weeks training could soon be working in New Zealand secondary schools.

Teach First New Zealand has teamed up with Auckland University to recruit people with a degree to go through training, and then teach in low-decile secondary schools.

The teachers would be bonded to their first school for two years...and then they'd go onto the same pay as a fully qualified teacher.

Chief executive Shaun Sutton has brought the scheme to New Zealand after taking part in it in the UK.

He says they're not looking for people with missionary zeal but people who understand socio-economic realities.

The programme is yet to be approved by the Teachers Council.
