New Zealand's vote against protection measures for the critically endangered Maui's dolphin is being described as outrageous. It's been revealed we were one of only two countries voting against the motion at the International Union for Conservation of Nature conference last week. The motion called for New Zealand to ban the use of gill and trawl nets in waters up to 100 metres deep in all areas where Mauiâ s dolphins are found. Green Party oceans spokesman Gareth Hughes says the Government is putting the interests of a handful of fishers ahead of the safety of the worldâ s most threatened dolphin. He says ironically it will likely damage the reputation of the wider fishing community, fishery exports and our clean, green brand. Photo: Department of Conservation |
