Volcanic alert levels at Mt Tongariro and White Island have been downgraded. Tongariro erupted a week and a half ago for the first time since 1897. Volcanologist Steven Sherburn from GNS Science says the reasons for the downgrade from level one to level two are simple. "Level two basically means there's minor eruptive activity and essentially neither of the volcanoes are erupting at the moment." GNS will continue to monitor both volcanoes. Photo: NZ Herald |
