Fireworks to herald in Valerie Adams at medal ceremony

| New Zealand News | Tuesday September 18 2012 13:10

Preparations are underway to fill the sky with fireworks in recognition of our Olympic stars.

Valerie Adams will receive her gold medal in a ceremony at Auckland's Queens Wharf tomorrow night.

The event will be followed by massive fireworks displays in Auckland and Wellington.

ANZ chief executive David Hisco says the displays will each last for about 7 minutes and cost tens of thousands of dollars to put on.

"This is one of the best performances that our athletes have put on for many, many Olympics, I think since 1984. These people work for four years, they focus very hard, they brought home gold medals and I think New Zealand should stand back for a few minutes and celebrate."

5.30pm: Public arrivals at The Cloud in Auckland or Frank Kitts park in Wellington

6:50pm: Function begins, followed by medal presentation, national anthem and speech by Valerie Adams

7:25pm: Fireworks begin in Auckland and Wellington
