A rude awakening for Wairoa residents as the town's hit by a swarm of earthquakes. There have been 10 small quakes of between 2.9 and 4.4 on the Richter Scale since 5:30pm yesterday. GeoNet seismologist Caroline Little says it's not unusual activity for the east coast of the North Island. She says there have been 170 reports from people who've felt the tremors. "One person has recorded that it was a strong quake, which means that there could have been some crockery falling off their shelves or that kid of thing but no structural damage." Ms Little says it's impossible to tell if the quakes will continue, or whether they'll get bigger or smaller. Photo: Supplied |
