Push to reduce injuries at work

By: Sam Thompson | New Zealand News | Monday September 17 2012 6:51

A business group says despite New Zealandâ s abysmal record on workplace health and safety, some Kiwi companies are dramatically reducing injuries at work.

A discussion paper on Workplace Health and Safety, says New Zealandâ s workplace injury rates are twice those of Australia and almost four times that of the UK.

Executive director of the Business Leadersâ Health and Safety Forum, Julian Hughes, agrees the number of injuries are high and says his organisation is trying reduce that by getting bosses involved in safety.

"I think sometimes there's almost an acceptance that some work you'll get injured at. And we're trying to turn that around to say that it's not acceptable to get hurt at work, and no matter what work you're doing, you should be able to do it and go home the way you turned up."
