PM in no rush to send first Navy ship to US

By: Jacqui Stanford | New Zealand News | Saturday September 22 2012 19:47

John Key seems hardly in a rush to make the most of the lifting of the ban on visits by our Navy ships to the US.

He had a lunch meeting with Leon Panetta at Auckland's Villa Maria winery, a day after the US Defense Secretary announced the move.

The Prime Minister says it's too early to say when the first ship will be sent to the US, he's more interested in what the change signifies.

"I think he's very committed to wanting that relationship to reflect the shape it's in and this was a message of the past that just didn't make any sense."
