Privacy commission keeps tabs on new technology

| New Zealand News | Wednesday June 13 2012 13:39

The Privacy Commissioner is keeping a close eye on the roll-out of new 3D mapping technology being developed by Google and Apple.

Apple has recruited a private fleet of aeroplanes to produce highly detailed 3D maps for iPhones and iPads, which could photograph what people do in their backyards and take pictures through skylights.

The Privacy Commissioner will demand a full briefing before it is launched in New Zealand.

Assistant privacy commissioner Katrine Evans says Google has promised to consult regularly with the commission about collecting personal information.
