Protestors will take to the streets of Gisborne this morning over hikes in the cost of parking in the central city. The district council's doubled fees from $1 to $2 an hour in some parking zones, and from 50 cents to $1 an hour in other areas. There's widespread dissatisfaction over the move, and at times the CBD looks like a ghost town as motorists park elsewhere to avoid the higher fees. Central city retailers are concerned about the impact on their businesses, with the Heart of Gisborne retailers organisation saying it's reducing the number of shoppers. Protest organiser Sandy Gibson is labelling it an arrogant and unacceptable move, and is hoping for a big turnout. Marchers are assembling at the Treble Court shopping complex at 8.30am, before heading to the council offices. Photo: stock.xchng |
