Psa discovered in Coromandel

By: Newstalk ZB staff | New Zealand News | Tuesday September 4 2012 11:24

It looks like the kiwifruit bacteria Psa-V has been discovered in the Coromandel.

Provisional tests on four Gold 9 vines in Whenuakite are positive and a 10 kilometre controlled area has been thrown up around the infected orchard.

But Kiwifruit Vine Health chief executive Barry O'Neil says it's still early days.

"We've only seen it on one orchard at this stage, on five vines and the grower has completely removed those vines and the adjoining vines."

Mr O'Neil says the discovery didn't come as much of a surprise.

"Obviously very disappointing but not totally unexpected, in light of what we've seen in other regions of the Bay of Plenty and obviously the Coromandel is relatively close."

A 10 kilometre controlled area has been thrown up around the infected orchard and verification is expected tomorrow.
