Iwi to receive $6.7 million

By: Aroha Tahau | New Zealand News | Saturday July 28 2012 19:04

A Bay of Plenty iwi is to receive $6.7 million and the return of confiscated land after its settlement claim was passed through parliament.

The claims bill which passed with no opposition, acknowledges Treaty breaches, financial redress, the transfer of over 3,400 hectares of Crown Forest Licensed Land and the return of key cultural sites.

Minister of Treaty Negotiations Chris Finlayson says the iwi, Ngati Makino, was doing nothing wrong when it was was caught up in the violence and warfare across the Waikato in the 1800's.
