Wellington Regional Public Health is asking councils to take smoking bans a step further.
It's made a submission to Porirua City Council to make all beaches, sports fields, outside dining spaces and public events smokefree in its long term plan.
Tobacco, alcohol, and drug team leader Kristen Foley says this is a practical thing councils can do to strengthen's the Government drive to make New Zealand smokefree by 2025.
He says they're trying to extend smokefree areas which will encourage people to quit and de-normalise the use of tobacco.
He says that in turn will stop others picking up the habit.
