New tool to avoid hiring abusers

By: Jacqui Stanford | New Zealand News | Sunday August 19 2012 11:36

There's a new tool to help organisations which deal with young people to spot potential abusers, and avoid hiring them.

The group Child Matters has revised its Safe Not Sorry package, which explains steps which can be taken during the recruitment process for paid staff and volunteers.

CEO Anthea Simcock says organisations which use can significantly reduce the risk of abusers getting onto their staff.

"What we're trying to do is to get an environment where people can be absolutely sure that the children that they send to school, to church group, to sports clubs, to culture groups, are going to be as safe as possible."

Ms Simcock says people who are involved with children needed to vetted exhaustively, when they're taken on.
