Students want alcohol purchase age to go up

By: Natasha Burling | New Zealand News | Tuesday May 1 2012 16:08

Medical students are supporting a proposal to raise the purchase age for alcohol.

National MP Tim Macindoe will be presenting a Supplementary Order Paper to parliament to raise the age back to 20 for off and onsite licensed premises.

It precedes the third and final reading of the Alcohol Reform Bill.

Medical Students for Global Awareness spokesman Stefan Fairweather admits it may seem strange to see a student body backing a proposal to raise the purchase age.

"You have a purchase age of 18 you get a lot of drift down, for want of a better word, of 13, 14-year-olds drinking. By lifting that purchase age we hope to see less harm done to young people."
