Auckland's amalgamation a case study for others

Auckland is being used as a case study at today's gathering of local government representatives.

The Local Government New Zealand annual conference opens today in Hamilton.

President Lawrence Yule says while there is plenty on the agenda, a session delving into Auckland's re-jig into a supercity has been the most popular.

"It's really around what other lessons have been found in Auckland.

"What are the things to look out for, what are the benefits, and what have been the downfalls, and it's really a pretty honest appraisal of what they've found so far."

Auckland amalgamated in 2010, from seven city and district councils and one regional council, to a single Auckland Council for the entire region - the largest local body in Australasia.

Mr Yule says other regions are also looking at amalgamating.
