Toxic warnings for shellfish in BOP

By: Newstalk ZB staff | New Zealand News | Saturday August 11 2012 14:09

A toxic warning along the Bay of Plenty coastline means it's hazardous to collect or eat shellfish.

Testing has confirmed high levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning, and people are being urged to avoid shellfish from the area between Tairua and Bowentown heads.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Jim Miller says it's a natural occurrence which is difficult to predict.

Eating shellfish affected by the toxin can cause paralysis, and respiratory failure.
