Infant death numbers hit record low

By: James Williams | New Zealand News | Tuesday February 19 2013 13:21

Infant death numbers have hit a record low.

Statistics New Zealand says 256 children aged under one died in 2012.

That's down from the 290 in 2011.

The infant mortality rate was 4.2 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2012 - down from 4.7 in 2011, and 5.6 in 2002.

Population statistics project manager Joel Watkins says the lower rate was due to a decrease in the number of Maori infants dying.
