Medsafe cracking down on illegal medicines

| New Zealand News | Friday October 5 2012 15:07

Medsafe is working hard to stop illegal, counterfeit and substandard medicines from entering New Zealand.

In a joint operation with customs, Medsafe intensified screening of mail packages in a bid to crack down on the popular method of accessing prescription medicines without seeing a doctor.

Medsafe group manager Stewart Jessamine says between 10,000 and 15,000 parcels have been stopped at the border in the last five years.

"These prescriptions are prescription medicines because they have risks associated with the use as well as benefits."

Stewart Jessamine says to obtain the appropriate and right effect from the medicine you have to be assured the product you're buying is what it says it is.
