Concerns over immediate safety of Kiwi soldiers

By: Jacob Brown | New Zealand News | Tuesday August 21 2012 20:02

There's concern for the safety of the New Zealand soldiers in Afghanistan, if precautionary measures aren't taken immediately.

It comes after the death of three Kiwi soldiers in the Bamyan Province on Sunday, just two weeks after two other New Zealand Defence Force personnel were killed.

Former Afghanistan Foreign Minister, now Otago University senior lecturer Dr Najibullah Lafraie, says it's relatively easy for Taliban forces to sneak in to where our troops are.

"It is a cause of concern and if more precautionary measures are not taken, I'm afraid there will be more such incidents."

Mr Lafraie says the presence of foreign troops is part of the problem in Afghanistan.

He says that can't be part of the solution.

"I think it will be a mistake to commit more troops because they cannot change the overall situation and it would only put the lives of more young Kiwis in danger."
