Hope for jobs at Rotorua factory

Jobs set to go at a Rotorua plastic packaging plant may be absorbed by the company's Hamilton premises.

The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU) says Sealed Air has told workers it intends to phase down production in Rotorua and close the plant by the middle of next year.

EPMU's manufacturing industry organiser, Louisa Jones, says there is some hope for the 112 workers affected.

She says they will be working with the company to make sure as many workers as possible are taken on in Hamilton.

Louisa Jones says the closure is another example of the slowdown across the manufacturing sector.

Rotorua Chamber of Commerce CEO, Roger Gordon, says a supermarket is earmarked to take the spot.

"And that supermarket centre would in fact provide employment opportunity for I believe 250 jobs."
