Total dairy cattle in NZ reaches six million

By: Sam Thompson | New Zealand News | Friday May 11 2012 14:13

Dairy is continuing to dominate the agricultural sector.

The country now has more than six million dairy cattle, an increase partly driven by higher milk solid pay outs.

Statistics New Zealand says that's an increase of more than 260,000 in the year to June 2011.

In contrast, sheep numbers are down one and half million to 31.1 million.

Part of the decline can be put down to bad weather, which affected the number of lambs born.
