A new job training programme in schools is being touted as the way to increase youth employment.
A report just out from the Salvation Army suggests the number of 15 to 19-year-olds in the workforce has dropped over the last five years by about the same number of over 65s who have stayed in the workforce past retirement age.
Industry Training Federation chief executive Mark Oldershaw says the Vocational Pathways programme is being piloted in schools this year and helps engage young people with industry early on.
"It allows students to clearly identify a career path that may be outside the traditional lines of employment to help align their skills with a structured career," he says.
"It's a way to really encourage students to think outside the traditional mechanisms of university and polytech study and open their eyes to more industry based vocational training."
Mr Oldershaw says schools cater well for those heading for university but they only make up 30 percent of students.
