Milk tanker crash cuts power to some in Southland

By: Nina Burton | New Zealand News | Saturday October 20 2012 8:43

Around 80 houses have been blacked out in Southland, after a milk tanker crashed into a power pole early this morning.

The incident happened at Mataura at around 3am.

Up to 15,000 litres of milk has spilled into the Mataura river.

A police spokesman says the tanker was travelling down Old Coach Road from Edendale when it crashed.

The fire service attended the scene, and notified Environment Southland around 3.15.

Spokeswoman for Environment Southland Michelle Poole says fortunately due to heavy rain, the milk would have been diluted.

She says given environmental conditions, it's likely there'll be no lasting environmental impact.
