A police dive team may be called in today to search for a missing fishing vessel off the coast of Fiordland. Western Southland Senior Sergeant Cynthia Fairley says they believe The Governor is a kilometre off shore near Yates Point, north of the mouth of the sound. The boat's 60-year-old skipper Kevin Cosgrove and 16-year-old crew member Nirvana Drew Reynolds are missing, after the boat failed to dock on Saturday. Cynthia Fairley says the search will be scaled back today. "Unless anything significant is found, the police will be scaling back to not using helicopters. But there will still be fishing vessels going through the area, so if they notify us that they've come across anything significant, then we send our resources out to have a look." Ms Fairley says there's talk about the viability of using the police dive squad to locate the wreckage, but the wreckage may be 40 metres deep. A trail of debris was found nine kilometres offshore yesterday, north of George Sound. Photo: stock.xchng |
