Counterfeit chainsaw sales prompt warning

By: Sam Thompson | New Zealand News | Friday August 10 2012 15:30

There's a warning for people to be wary of counterfeit Stihl chainsaws, often purchased online.

Stihl New Zealand Managing Director Jim Bibby says unlike buying a â knock offâ wrist watch or designer handbag, purchasing a counterfeit chainsaw is playing Russian roulette with safety.

He says safety-critical devices may be faulty or totally absent in counterfeits.

Mr Bibby says the hand guard for the automatic chain brake, the most important safety device on a chainsaw, was found to be broken in recent counterfeits handed over to them.
