Far North school singing praises of breakfast, lunch scheme

| New Zealand News | Friday November 9 2012 7:10

It remains to see whether Hone Harawira's Breakfast and Lunch Bill gets through parliament, but one school in the Far North is singing the praises of a similar scheme.

The Mana Party leader's bill would see the state fund meals for all decile one and two schools.

Lisa Murray, the deputy principal of Ahipara School, near Kaitaia, says a sponsored breakfast scheme works well at her school.

She says the school also provides lunch in some cases.

"We have in the past had lunches provided through our social worker in schools, but they no longer do that, and so the staff and whoever wanted to have just made some sandwiches so that there is something there."

Lisa Murray says teachers report better concentration levels when pupils aren't hungry.
