Coroner recommends helmets after skateboard death

| New Zealand News | Tuesday September 4 2012 14:02

A coroner is recommending all riders of motorised skateboards wear helmets.

It comes after the death of Tom Kenny in Havelock in January 2010.

He died from a head injury after falling from his board, but Coroner Carla na Nagara has also found he was more than twice the legal blood alcohol limit for driving.

She says she considers it an anomaly in a legal and practical sense that riders of motorised skateboarders aren't required to wear helmets, given the speeds they can reach.

The Coroner is recommending the Land Transport Rule 2004 be amended so that riders are required to wear helmets.
