Doubts about Waitangi Tribunal report's consideration

By: Newstalk ZB staff | New Zealand News | Friday August 24 2012 17:40

Doubts are being cast on just what weight the Government's going to give to a Waitangi Tribunal report on water rights.

The Tribunal indicates Maori may have residual property rights so wants the Government to halt its partial asset sale programme until an accommodation can be reached with Maori on the issue

The Government says it'll consider the findings ahead of making decisions next month on the planned float of Mighty River Power.

But Green Party Co-Leader Russel Norman has doubts about how genuine the consideration will be.

"The government has to pretend that its taking the report seriously. If they don't go through the pretence, of pretending to read it and pretending to take it seriously then they are wide open to legal case that they haven't given the report due consideration."
