Dotcom's extradition hearing in August

By: Anna Cross | Latest National News | Thursday February 23 2012 5:59

Internet mogul Kim Dotcom

is living a far more straitened existence than he's used to.

The Megaupload founder has been bailed to a Coatesville property that adjoins the mansion where he was arrested.

He's been ordered not to travel more than 80 kilometres from that property and won't have access to the internet.

His lawyer Paul Davison QC says the High Court authorisation of the restraining of Dotcom's assets, includes a provision which allows a judge to consider whether some assets can be released.

"Hopefully some funds will be released which will enable him to meet his living expenses and those other forms of expenses including his legal expenses for the defence."

Dotcom plans to fight the US bid to extradite him and Mr Davison QC says there's a lot of work to do before the hearing.

"He's obviously anxious to have the matter progressed as soon as possible but he was very concerned about having to face that prospect of waiting and being in custody."

However the US Government has yet to file an extradition request.

Mr Davison says the US Government is required to file its request within 45 days of the arrest of the person it's asked to be detained.

"He was detained on the 20th of January and 45 days expires on the 5th of March and to date that request has not been presented to the New Zealand Government."
