Crackdown on contraband smuggling in prisons

By: Sam Thompson | New Zealand News | Friday September 28 2012 16:57

Corrections is cracking down on prisoners smuggling in contraband in their television sets.

Prisoners will no longer be allowed to bring in their own TV sets.

Instead they will be required to hire especially made TV sets from Corrections.

Spokesman Brendan Anstiss says these TV sets will be see-through, using clear plastic so illicit and illegal items cannot be easily hidden inside.

"In the last year there were about 130 incidents of contraband being discovered in televisions. We're looking to eliminate that through the provision of the clear, transparent TV casings."
