Fisherman calls for lifting of ban on set netting

| New Zealand News | Tuesday August 28 2012 19:21

A Taranaki fisherman is calling for the immediate lifting of a government ban on set netting.

The Minister for Primary Industries closed Taranaki Inshore waters to set nets in late June to protect endangered Maui's dolphins.

Ian McDonald says government observers on five boats haven't seen a single Maui's or Hector's dolphin in the last month.

He says the ban should be lifted and fishermen compensated for lost income.

Mr McDonald says catches are down on previous seasons and one business has already gone to the wall.
