State Highway 29 on the Tauranga side of the Kaimai Ranges will be closed this weekend so rocks can be cleared from the road. The road was closed yesterday morning after heavy rain caused rocks to fall on the road, but was later re-opened to one lane. Bay of Plenty state highway manager, Brett Gliddon says the heavy rain's undermined the stability of the bluff and has caused other sections of rock to be weakened. He says the road will be closed so blasting activity can be undertaken safely. Workers will continue to manage traffic through a stop/go operation until 7am on Saturday morning, when it will close completely. Photo: NZ Herald |
