The dawn service at Waitangi has not been without incident.
Hone Harawira was involved in a brief stand off this morning following the dawn service when his mother, Titewha Harawira, was called a "Kupapa" which can be translated as traitor by a man in the crowd, the two parties were soon separated.
The Prime Minister says there'll be a thoughtful and genuine process over the sell-down of state assets.
It's been the main bone of contention at Waitangi celebrations this year, leading to some noisy and bitter confrontations.
John Key says there's been some misinformation about whether a specific Treaty of Waitangi clause will be in the legislation.
The country's top policeman hopes today's events will be free from disruption.
Police Commissioner Peter Marshall is on his first trip to Waitangi, since taking up the role in April last year.
He says it was disappointing to see protestors advance on the Prime Minister at Te Tii Marae.
But he says it's up to the marae to allow loud hailers into the area, and open it up to the public.
He says he's happy with the way police and Maori wardens defused the situation.
Meanwhile thousands are expected at Manukau's Barry Curtis in Flat Bush, where some of New Zealand's best bands are playing.
It's a free event including music, food, information about the Treaty, and arts and crafts.
This year's line-up includes Katchafire, David Dallas and Ardijah.
