Adventure camp offers youth valuable skills

By: Kaye Albyt | New Zealand News | Tuesday August 21 2012 6:06

A new arrangement for an adventure camp south of Auckland is being described as a win-win.

Waiuku College has been running the Awhitu Environmental Camp, but the venture is now being taken over by the High Wire Charitable Trust, which recently recruited Victoria Cross recipient Willie Apiata.

Auckland councillor Ann Hartley says the camp offers young people valuable skills.

"They're looking after their mental health, their whole thing about getting employment, all their needs in terms of educational, physical."

Ms Hartley says the arrangement will breathe new life into the camp and will relieve a financial burden for Waiuku College.
