Report into alleged slavery on fishing boats welcomed

By: Annabel Reid | New Zealand News | Wednesday February 22 2012 6:38

A lawyer is welcoming a United States report into alleged slavery on board fishing vessels operating in New Zealand waters.

Ben Skinner of the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism highlighted cases of labour bondage in his report for Bloomberg Businessweek.

Lawyer and Slave Free Seas spokesman Craig Tuck says the report substantiates what they've been saying for the last few months.

"It would appear that human trafficking is alive and well in some aspects of some businesses in New Zealand and that is concerning to say the least."

Mr Tuck says it's now time for the New Zealand government to step up and use its laws to stop it happening.
